June 13
Dear Families,
We appreciate all of the support this year and especially through this challenging time. We will remain hopeful that we are back in class on Monday however we recognize that it may not be a possibility. We thank you for all your kind words and help in the classroom and asking how to support your child at home. It is important to us that parents follow their child's learning and understand their child's strengths and pace to learn. We encourage everyone to go at their own pace with our support and to persevere through the tough parts.
Summer ideas to keep the brain active: read to them daily, start reading them chapter books that capture their attention, encourage them to read to you, encourage them to write with purpose (write a letter/card, leaves notes for each other around the house, create a treasure hunt with written notes), continue with the art journals, stare up at the clouds, tell each other stories, make up stories, record them, stay physically active and of course play dates a must!
We are very proud of each child we taught this year, we have seen amazing growth in everyone in different areas from Self-Regulation, Arts, Math and Literacy.
If we return next week, I hope to have enough time to offer everyone a DVD of our classroom memories. We have done so much this year!

Tuesday Sharing
For the next 5 weeks the children will have the opportunity to bring something special in from home. They are to try and keep it a mystery until they get the opportunity to share it to a small group of students by first giving 3 clues about the item. A conversation at home about what they are going to bring and sitting down and writing out 3 clues about the item will help them with these mini presentations. They will then present the clues to a small group of students and have the opportunity to talk and answer questions about the item. It is encouraged to bring in an item that is meaningful. An item related to a special skill, an interesting natural treasure, or even a photo of a special trip.
I have included a date list below for who shares on what Tuesday. I will try and remind them the Monday before as well.
April 8 - Alexa, Armaan, Cohen, Hannah, Madi
April 15 - April, Brandon, Ella, Keira, Mckinley,
April 22 - Chase, Gilliane, Kolby, Joel
April 29 - Mehar, Mya, Nina, Kobe
May 6 - Quinten, Tushar, Yuan, Zoie

Art Infusion-update
We have been having a fabulous time with Mrs. Klaan learning about different mediums and learning how to blend them. Our theme since the beginning of the year has been "the story of me" and will continue to develop until the end of the year. Today we had the opportunity to combine different mediums including photography. We used mirrors to look at the different expresses we can show. Each student had 2 photos of themselves depicting 2 different emotions. Awesome work.
Next week, each student will need to bring in 1 rock, palm size and smooth. We will be exploring a new medium (acrylic paint) and using the book "Only One You" as inspiration. If your family is excited to rock hunt for others that would also be appreciated since not everyone will have a chance to bring in a rock.

February
Next Friday February 14th we will be celebrating both 100 days of school and Valentines day. The morning will be devoted to the number 100! Mrs Buxton's class had a wonderful idea and each student will bring in 100 of something of their choice. We are going to do the same and share what 100 looks like many different ways. I will bring in 100 grains of rice. Please spend some time with your child counting to 100 and bring something in on Friday.
The afternoon we will celebrate Valentines Day with some crafts and hand out cards. A class list was sent home and we ask that if your child is going to bring in Valentines that they include one for everyone.
Mrs Wagner is also searching for tiny treasures. If you have any small objects that would be helpful for making letter sound bags I would love to have them. Small kinder surprise toys or anything about an inch in size that would have a clear beginning letter sound. The missing parts of toys and the items you step on on the floor :). The items that have no where to go are the kind I'm looking for.
Fashion Show
Our Grade 7 leaders are working with students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 on a fundraiser for B.C. Children’s Hospital. They have chosen lunch hour on Thursday, February 13th from 12:00-12:40pm to hold their “fashion” show. Admission will be by donation and their goal is to raise $200 for Children’s Hospital. They have been taking photos and will film the fashion show. They want to put together a slideshow to send to Children’s Hospital along with their donation — a sort of “living get well card.” This event is meant to be fun and inspiring with bright and colourful clothing along with some fun accessories. Parents are welcome to come watch this fun and worthwhile event.

December News
On Friday we will be building animal habitats of our choice. We will be building these using icing, candy, cookies, marshmellows, pretzels, and what ever the kids choose. If you have any items that could help us in our creating please bring them in. We started brain storming today and some excellent ideas were formulating.
I have set up a lost and found at the front door, a lot of food containers and winter clothing, please come in and have a look.
Our Christmas toy/food hamper is filling up. This is the final week to bring items in.
Reminder Christmas concert is Wed Dec 18th. Parking is by $1 raffle, good luck! Hand in raffle tickets to Mrs Smilie.
The last day before the break (Dec 20th) the whole school is encouraged to come wearing Red and Green.

The Grade 7 WE Day students have decided to raise funds for the ongoing
relief efforts in the Philippines. This will be their 'global project'.
We are asking for donations from Mamquam families as well as running a
coat check (by donation) at the Christmas Craft Fair.
Mrs. Smillie will have a collection box in the office. We will gladly accept
cheques!
All monies collected will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross. The
federal government will match all donations dollar for dollar.
Thanks for helping!

We will also be having a Halloween rotation in the morning, all 5 classes will host a Halloween acctivity and all the kids will visit each room to do an activity related to Halloween.

LICE
Sorry to inform you that lice seems to be everywhere this fall and our class is no exemption. Please check your child on a regular basis. Also note that if you find some there are many ways to treat it but most importantly you must clean linens and fine comb hair everyday for at least a week.

Parent Volunteers
Our goal is to focus on student learning. At this time, we welcome siblings to sit on the carpet with us while we listen quietly to the morning announcements. Once the announcements are done the siblings are offered a hand stamp at the door as they say goodbye. If our classroom door is open in the morning before the bell please feel free to come in and see us or help your child get ready. We have posted a sign up sheet on the window near the outside door. Please feel free to sign up to help us out on the highlighted days. We welcome parents to flow with our routines or help us out by preparing materials for future activities (always need help on this one). At this time, we have requested parents from 9-10:30. If you are unable to attend any of the highlighted days please see us and we will try to make it work on another day.
Our K/1 team is always looking for opportunities to make learning meaningful for the students. We welcome parents that would like to share a special talent/hobby with the children or would your workplace be able to accomodate our class and others to visit?

Great to see everyone coming to school dressed for the rain!
We are collecting toilet paper rolls for some future projects. If you have any please bring them in.
A reminder to get your criminal record check completed if you would like to join us on future field trips. See Mrs. Smile and she will give you the paperwork. We are hoping for our first trip to be on October 15th, more information will be sent home soon.

School Suppplies
Today I had time to go through everyone's supplies. Any extra items we did not need went home today. Two new computers were installed in our classroom today. They will be for enhancing the students learning. When possible send your child to school with earbuds or small headphones so they can connect to our computers, reading center and computer lab computers. It would also be helpful if they came in a ziplock bag labelled with their first name. I prefer the children not share the earbuds or headphones.

Class routines...
We are trying "pack in-pack out" system, so you will notice juice boxes and empty fruit cups and yogurt containers go back home to be recycled. I am encouraging the children to bring water bottles and we can fill them up at school.
I am slowly going through all the school supplies and sort and labelling them as we need them. If you are having trouble finding some items please let me know.
Our keen team of K/1 teachers met today and we are already collaborating on combining our classes for special activities and field trips. Speaking of field trips if you would like to join us on a field trip, please get your Criminal Record check done and completed to Mrs. Smillie before the end of September.
At this time I do not need extra clothes or inside shoes but as the weather changes we will. I will post a message when we are ready to receive the extras.
